Falkirk Council is set to take part in a national week of action against climate change.
From Monday 7 to Sunday 13 October, the Energy & Climate Change team and local organisations are hosting events, talks and roadshows around the area to highlight initiatives in our community.
The week of action is part of Scotland's annual Climate Week, a Scottish Government initiative coordinated by the Sustainable Scotland Network. It aims to stimulate thinking, ambition and innovation around climate change and what we can do to fight it.
The Scottish Parliament's Climate Change Committee declared a climate emergency in June this year, voting in favour of a net-zero target for 2045 and to increase targets for 2030 and 2040.
In Falkirk, the Council's Energy & Climate Change team are showcasing how we can all make a difference to reduce our carbon footprint and help Scotland reach its climate targets, with public events on the themes of:
- Travel
- Food
- Energy
- Waste
- Water
- Biodiversity
Climate Change Officer, Claire Marion, said:
"There is a climate emergency and all scientific papers give the same conclusion: the climate crisis is affecting all the regions of the world, including Scotland.
"Unless immediate action is taken to reduce our emissions, we'll see more severe weather events such as fires, floods and droughts, heat waves, health impacts, disruptions to the food supplies and rising sea levels.
"Every single one of us needs to help in the fight against climate change, and we can do that by making small, permanent adjustments to our daily lives - such as reducing our meat consumption.
"We're trying to help educate and make people think about the benefits of living greener, and that's what Climate Week and our events are all about."
Earlier this year the Energy & Climate Change team launched the Sustainable Falkirk map, which shows local businesses, shops and community groups promoting a sustainable lifestyle.
