The clocks have changed, the days are shorter and the temperature has dipped ... yes, winter is nearly upon us so we need to prepare for bad weather and stay safe during the darker days.

If you are a driver:

  • Check your tyre pressure and tread depth regularly.
  • Get your battery checked.
  • Make sure that your wiper blades are in good condition.
  • Add anti-freeze to the radiator and winter additive to the windscreen washer bottles.
  • Keep the windscreen, washers, mirrors and lights clean and clear of snow and ice.
  • Clear all snow and ice from your vehicle and trailer to avoid sheets of ice flying off the vehicle.

If you are out and about on foot after dark:

  • Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to arrive.
  • Keep your mobile phone charged.
  • Stick to well-lit, busy areas whenever possible - never be tempted to take a short cut through parks, alleyways or car parks.
  • Always be aware of your surroundings and the people around you. The sooner you become aware of potential danger, the easier it is to avoid it.
  • Trust your instincts. If you feel uneasy about anything don’t tell yourself “it’s fine” and don’t wait for your fears to be confirmed. Get away from the situation or get help as quickly as possible.

Bad weather can also impact on your working conditions, especially if you drive while at work. For guidance on what to do should the weather take a turn for the worst read our Adverse Weather Policy.
