When an elderly man was found living in destitute conditions by his son and daughter, something had to be done to improve his quality of life.

Living on a state retirement pension of £589.32 and a small private pension of £194.75, with mounting debts, the family turned to Falkirk Council’s Community Advice teams for help.

With debts affecting his mental health and with no other income to sustain himself with, Mr Jones – not his real name – was referred to the Council’s Debt Advice and Welfare Benefits teams for help in reducing his outgoings and maximising his income.

Benefits check

From the information provided, a benefit check was carried out and it was discovered that Mr Jones was entitled to Pension Credit and a full reduction in Council Tax. A phone appointment was swiftly arranged to assist in the completion of his claims.

Within ten days, Mr Jones found out that he was awarded Pension Credit to the sum of £62.40 per week – backdated to May 2020 – in addition to his State Retirement Pension. His Council Tax reduction was also awarded and backdated.

Pension Credit not only opened up the award for full Council Tax Reduction but opened the door for free NHS dental treatment, and the ability to claim towards the cost of spectacles and Mr Jones’ travel to hospital.

Winter fuel discount

Mr Jones was also made aware of the Warm Home Discount – giving him the opportunity of having £140 deducted from his winter fuel bills, and advice on how to contact Home Energy Scotland, who give advice on saving energy.

Thanks to help from Falkirk Council’s Community Advice teams, Mr Jones’ financial situation has improved considerably. He’s now on top of his finances, and living a happier, healthier life.
