The Council’s Debt Advice Team offer a free, confidential and impartial service to local residents and Council employees.

From March 2020 (prior to lockdown) to the end of December, the team supported 492 clients get help from local money advice services and clients who had been directly impacted by COVID-19.

Advice is available on all types of debt and include:

  • Rent and mortgage arrears
  • Council tax
  • Credit cards and store cards
  • Bank/personal loans

Council Leader Cecil Meiklejohn said: “The last year has been a difficult time for many people, particularly those on low incomes and people who have been furloughed or lost their jobs as a direct result of COVID-19.

“We would urge people not to struggle in silence and to get help sooner rather than later.

“Our team offers a wide range of support which is free and confidential. Help is only a phone call away!”

There are a number of other services available in addition to the Debt Advice Service:

  • Welfare benefits – provides a free, impartial and confidential service on all benefit matters
  • Support for People – assists those who are vulnerable as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic with access to food, medicines/prescriptions and other essential services
  • Scottish Welfare Fund – grants are available for people who are on a  low income or are having difficulties because of an exceptional situation
