Members agreed a report at yesterday's Executive which sets out a comprehensive range of options to make Muiravonside Country Park more popular and efficient to operate.

The Country Park provides nearly 70 hectares (170 acres) of woodland and parkland; an extensive path network; a mini demonstration farm (Newparks Farm); café; community growing area; sculpture trail; and a children's play area. The River Avon Heritage Trail runs through the site and both the Union Canal and John Muir Way pass close by.

Last year 160,000 visitors spent time in the park, a substantial increase on pre-covid visits of 125,000. In the last year there has been £230,000 of investment and recruitment of ranger staff.

Investment includes:

  • £186,000 spent on upgrading paths which led to the reopening of the River Avon Heritage Trail fully funded by Sustrans
  • Path upgrades around Newparks Farm, Muiravonside Visitors Centre and play area
  • £20,000 of health and safety upgrades to park buildings (farm, visitor centre and café)
  • £24,000spent on new pond creations, habitat enhancement and path maintenance work carried out by volunteers.

Plans will be taken forward to generate income and make the park more efficient to run with a five-year lease for the popular steading café finalised following a tender advertised in March this year. Interest is currently being sought for the potential transfer of Newparks farm to a third party which will help to reduce costs and increase income at the park as will the new parking plan and charges.

Councillor Paul Garner, spokesperson for Economic Development said:

"Muiravonside is our only Country Park in the area and is a popular and well used open space for residents and a key asset in our tourism offer. It’s encouraging to see a substantial increase in visitors to the park. The café concession and other planned investments will enhance the visitor experience and help continue this upward trend in visitor numbers well into the future."

The Park Rangers, appointed in 2022, have developed an activity/events programme, with over 60 Ranger-led events planned this year while the play area could soon be upgraded as part of the Council’s Playpark Renewal Programme.
