In our council area, over 12,000 households live on a low income, and around 1 in 4 children live at or below the poverty line.

Behind those stark statistics lie individuals of all ages and genders, struggling to keep their heads above water, putting on a brave face each day to shield their children from the difficulties they face.

As an organisation, we're committed to helping those who, for whatever reason or circumstance, are struggling to put food on the table, heat their home and put clothes on their back.

That’s why it’s important that we all try to understand the realities of poverty and the things we can do to support those impacted by it.

How you can help

To help you do that, our Fairer Falkirk team is running monthly Think Poverty sessions to highlight the impact living on a low income has on people’s freedom and choices.

The sessions also offer practical advice and resources that you can direct people to should they experience financial hardship regardless of whether they are a client or a colleague, a family member, friend or neighbour too.

Initially rolled out during Challenge Poverty Week 2022, the practical sessions received overwhelmingly positive feedback from all those who attended. Here’s just a snippet of what people said:

"I found the sessions very informative and, at times, quite heart-breaking. The number of children locally living in poverty is appalling."

"After this presentation, I have a better idea of where to signpost people for support and advice."

"It has signposted me to support mechanisms, reminded me of options that can be used, and emphasised the importance of being mindful that anyone can be living in poverty."
