It isn't just about supporting charities and community groups; you can use the hours available to you through our Employee volunteering policy to support other council services – and that’s exactly what Carole Mcnairney did.

As a Human Resources Officer, Carole (pictured) knew about the policy and had heard of others using the extra day’s paid leave it offered employees to support good causes.

For Carole, that meant using her experience in recruitment to help interview senior pupils at Larbert High School, providing them with feedback to help them once they’d left school and were looking for work or apply for a college placement.

Carole said: "We can all remember our first interview and how nerve wrecking it can be, so to be able to work with the pupils to help them prepare for the world of work in a safe environment was really rewarding. I gave written and spoken feedback, and the pupils were able to ask me questions afterwards.

“I really enjoyed the experience. The pupils were all great and interested in the process. Some of them were very focused on their future career path, and it was lovely to hear them talking so passionately about what they wanted to do. The school was also really appreciative.

“I think the Employee Volunteering Policy is a great way for employees to share their skills and experience with others, or to help local charities and organisations. It really did feel good to be able to give something back and I hope to be able to do more volunteering in the future. If you are thinking of using the policy, I’d encourage you to take advantage of it and try volunteering."
