Community councillors wanted

Community councillors from all walks of life are needed to represent the views of people living in their area.

Made up of local volunteers with a genuine interest in the wellbeing and development of their community, they consult on issues affecting their neighbourhoods.

Leader of Falkirk Council Councillor Cecil Meiklejohn said:

“Community councils are an important link between Falkirk Council and the communities we serve.

“Not only do they represent public opinion, but they work tirelessly to enhance and improve their neighbourhoods.

“They can be effective in getting local projects established and funded through, for example, Falkirk Council’s Community Choices programme.

“Community councils are a great way of getting involved and taking action locally, and I'd encourage anyone interested to apply.”

What is a community council?

A community council is a voluntary organisation set up to represent the views of the communities in the area, working with local councils and licensing boards.

It's run independently by local residents - community councillors - and acts as a vital link between Falkirk Council and its communities.

They are usually involved in community improvement, events and local campaigns. They can apply for Community Choices funding to make projects happen in their area.

Community councils are consulted on licensing and planning applications within their area.

Can I stand as a community councillor?

Anyone with an interest in their local neighbourhoods can be a community councillor.

You must be:

  • Over 16 years of age
  • On the electoral register for the area you wish to represent
  • Living in the Community Council area you wish to represent

Nominees need a proposer and seconder who both must be on the electoral register and live in the same Community Council area.

What is the time commitment?

Community councils usually hold meetings every month. You can dedicate as much time as you like.

Even a few hours every month could make a big difference in your neighbourhood.

How do I apply?

We’ll publish an application form on our website when nominations open on 29 August 2022. Paper copies will be available on request.

Nominations can be made until 16 September 2022, with confirmations made in late October.

How do community council elections work?

For community councils it is a two-stage process – the first is to seek nominations.

  • If the exact number of nominations are received for a given community council, it can be formed.
  • If the number of nominations exceeds the required number, then an election will take place.
  • If there are too few nominations, Falkirk Council's Executive may determine what action to take to try and establish a community council
