Proposals that could see an increase in pricing for electric vehicle charging across the extensive network Falkirk area are set to be discussed by elected members next week (14 February).

Being put forward for discussion are:

  • New charges for fast, rapid and ultra-rapid charging points

  • An increase in the minimum spend

  • Increases for overstay at chargers

The Council has been leading the way with 90 charging points expected to be in place at 38 locations in the area by February 2024. The Council wants to encourage the private sector to provide more charging points across the area, however, the current charging regime does not encourage this.

Increasing Energy Prices

Existing tariffs are no longer covering the cost to Falkirk Council and up until the end of 2022, the Council spent £71k on electricity but only received an income of £38k. This equates to 54% of costs being covered following the significant increases in electricity charges globally.

Cost-neutral

If approved, income generated from the increases would allow the service to expand and would be a cost-neutral proposal (i.e. not for profit) and encourage more provision of charging points.

The full report is available online and the meeting will take place on Wednesday 14 February – it can be watched live on YouTube.
