Slamannan Cross is set to undergo a major transformation, with a £500,000 investment from Falkirk Council’s Regeneration Fund driving the improvements.

Shaped by community consultation, the project will create a modern, welcoming space that balances the needs of the village with its heritage.

The planned work is part of the Council’s broader strategy to create a vibrant hub for the local community while addressing longstanding infrastructure issues, including the derelict Royal Hotel which was demolished last year.

The park will incorporate the date stone from the former hotel and interpretation panels explaining the site's history as well as a community noticeboard.

A tree will also be planted which, once matured, will serve as the village's festive tree, with a power source built into the design to accommodate seasonal lighting.

Public realm improvements

At the heart of the Slamannan Cross project are improvements to the public realm, which will introduce trees, seating areas, resurfacing and new planting in the pedestrian area to the front of the shopping parade.

A power supply will also be installed for temporary retail and community events, making the area more attractive to residents and visitors.

Council site visits identified several issues, including damaged tarmac, unsightly raised kerbs, and ad hoc parking on pedestrian pavements.

These problems will be addressed through the upgrade work, which aims to create a safer environment for the community to enjoy and supports local businesses.

Civic pride

The historic town clock will also be restored. Specialist repairs will be undertaken and new lighting installed. Two bronze lion’s head plaques will be reinstated during the restoration.

Timeline for the work

Restoration of the clock could begin as early as mid-March 2025, with the remainder of the work due to start in summer 2025.

Cllr Paul Garner, Falkirk Council’s Deputy Leader, and spokesperson for Economic Development, said:

Once complete, the redesigned Slamannan Cross will be a welcoming space that all the community can enjoy, public events can be held, and markets organised. It will offer a space where residents can connect, and local businesses can thrive. With work set to begin soon, the community can look forward to a transformed Slamannan Cross that celebrates its history while helping to create a more vibrant entrance to the village.
