Are you prepared?

You can significantly reduce the risk to you, your family and your property by being informed and prepared.

Being aware of the hazards and threats in your local community will help you prepare for the consequences they may bring. By planning and preparing now, you can limit the impact an emergency could have on you and your family. There are many types of emergency situations that could disrupt your daily life including not being able to travel, get in touch with family members, colleagues and other people.

You should:

  • Identify the hazards and threats that might affect you at home and in your local area
  • Identify somewhere your family can meet if you are evacuated or cannot return to your home
  • Check your home insurance cover in detail

Make a plan

Making a plan will help you think about what items you may need if an incident causes you to leave your home.

Here are some ideas to help get you started:

  • Create an emergency plan for your own household and discuss what actions you may take and tell everyone in your household about it
  • Discuss who to keep in contact and take a note of useful contact telephone numbers, but remember you might not be able to use your mobile phone in some situations
  • Take the time to find out how to turn off water, gas and electricity supplies to your home
  • Think about the essential things you may need if you are unable to remain in your home

In an emergency, radio stations often broadcast important information. You should tune your radio to your local stations.

These are:

  • Central FM: FM 103.1
  • BBC Radio Scotland: FM 92-95/MW 810

Take time to help your elderly or vulnerable neighbours where possible. You may also wish to consider a plan for your pets. If you have to leave your home during an emergency situation (and if it is safe to do so), remember to turn off electricity, gas and water and ensure all doors and windows are locked.
