Andy's story

Andy up a ladder at a telegraph pole

Our Employment and Training Unit works with a variety of local partners providing pre-employment support to Falkirk residents. Like Andy, a local Falkirk boy who worked with one of ETU's partners, Cyrenians.

Initially, Andy felt daunted by the thought of applying for jobs and wasn't sure what his options were. He began working on building his confidence and communication skills with Cyrenians. Receiving one on one support meant Andy was able to get the advice and encouragement he needed to look for work and sell himself to potential employers.

After receiving this pre-employment support, Andy is now confident and ambitious; aiming to be the best he can at whatever he puts his mind to. He has almost completed his full-time apprenticeship as a telecommunications engineer while also training with the Army Reserves. Andy loves his work with the reserves particularly due to the people he meets and the new experiences he's gaining. The chance to really improve himself and show what he is capable off shines as his biggest motivation.

Despite balancing these two responsibilities, Andy's ambition doesn't stop there. He now hopes to venture into starting his own business once he earns his way up in the engineering field. Speaking from his own experience, Andy says:

"Looking back at where I was at one point in my life, I can honestly say… if you feel like your back is up against a wall, there is always light at the end of the tunnel. If you want something badly enough, you can do it!"

People can face many different barriers to entering work. Andy shows that with the right support, you can work to remove those barriers and achieve your goals. If you would like to know more about how ETU may be able to support you, contact us today.
