Music lover Caitlin was unsure what she wanted to do after leaving school, so decided to find her first job in fast food while she considered her options. While Caitlin did leave school with good qualifications, she worried that they may not be the subject's employers would look for. Business admin was not something Caitlin had considered before, however after spotting that Falkirk Council's Employment and Training Unit (ETU) were recruiting for their Business Admin programme, she decided to go for it.
Caitlin went on to complete her SVQ Level 1 and 2 in both Kinneil Primary School and Bo'ness Academy by joining the office teams. Caitlin initially found this very nerve wracking, however enjoyed her time earning and learning at the same time. She describes this time as the real push she needed to build her confidence.
Once her placements within the schools had come to an end, Tammy, Caitlin's ETU advisor helped her prepare for work, supporting her to update her CV and being proactive with job searching. Tammy recommended applying for a placement at Falkirk Council's Registrar's where Caitlin could complete an SVQ Level 3. Caitlin was initially intimidated at the thought of working at a registrar's office however interviewed for the job so well that she managed secure the role within hours of interview.
After completing her modern apprenticeship, Caitlin became a permanent staff member and has recently earned a certificate of Proficiency in the Law and Practice of Registration. Passing this exam is Caitlin's proudest moment as she persevered with her studying despite the complications of the pandemic and still working full-time.
Caitlin shares her advice:
If you're young and not sure what you want to do, my advice is to keep an open mind and take the pressure off yourself to know all the answers. Push yourself to try something different, it may lead to something you wouldn't have expected."
When Caitlin first left school, she would never have predicted the career path she has now taken. However, now looks back and is glad to have tried something outwith her comfort zone. Caitlin is proud of overcoming her anxiety and continues to be a valued and experienced member of the Falkirk Council registrar staff.
